Churches all across the country have been having money problems galore this year. As the politicians say, “It’s the economy!” With things so uncertain, church members and friends have been afraid to pledge and afraid to give. We hope things will continue to improve in 2011. With the help of Mary Ann Weber and Gerry Scheidt, we have outlined a stewardship campaign that doesn’t just ask for money, but celebrates our life together, so you’ll know what you’re supporting. It begins on October 10 and will help us to realize what a “treasure” our church life is. Please try not to miss any of it.
The Adult Education Class begins on October 10, as well. What’s your favorite Bible story? Is it one of the great events of the Bible or just a sidelight? We will meet at 8:45 each Sunday morning to sort through all the “Great Events” to see which are really milestones in our faith. Last Spring we studied the Great People of the Bible and learned about many of the leading personalities as well as characters we had barely heard of before. (If this time doesn’t attract a sizable number of people, we might move it to a week day.) The Brown Bag Bible Study will begin when we settle on the best day for it.
How much do you know about putting worship together? Would you like to know more, or even help choose items for our Sunday service? Here’s your chance. A Worship Planning group is in the works here at St. John’s. I invite you to join other members on Wednesday, October 13 at 7:00 for a little primer on worship. I have a number of books that tell about the important aspects of Christian worship. Some of the resources approach worship from the traditional viewpoint, while some are very modern and praise or seeker-oriented. Check this out and see, first, how much you know about worship construction and, second, if you would like to be in on the planning here at St. John’s. After some basic learning and orientation, we will plan the season of Advent together.
